Julie Rummer's backyard has undergone a stunning transformation in Turlock, California. Thanks to the Bobcat Backyard Makeover Contest, her outdoor space is now a fully accessible paradise, tailored to her needs as a quadriplegic and avid gardener. With a $25,000 makeover prize, Bobcat equipment played a pivotal role in turning Rummer's once challenging and "embarrassing" yard into her dream garden.
Rummer, who has faced mobility challenges since a car accident in 1995, found it difficult to enjoy her passion for gardening due to the yard's condition. However, the contest win in the summer of 2023 changed everything. Bobcat, alongside local dealer Bobcat Central, Inc., and a team of contractors, friends, and family, worked together to create an accessible, beautiful backyard space.
According to a statement, the renovation involved substantial groundwork with Bobcat skid-steer loaders and MT100 mini-track loaders to prepare and modify the landscape. The project included removing an old patio to install a new ramp, relocating trees, and setting up concrete paths for easy wheelchair access. Additionally, the makeover included installing an updated irrigation system, planting drought-tolerant flora, laying cedar mulch, and adding extra features like lighting and a fire pit to enhance the outdoor experience.
"I just feel happy; it’s a happy place to be. Having complete access to nature and my garden is freedom," Rummer said.
This makeover showcases Bobcat's commitment to empowering individuals through their equipment but also highlights the community's support in making Julie's dream come true.
