Winter is Coming

Whether you live in town or in the country, there are always jobs to be done before winter arrives.

Prepare for power outages

Have what you need for heat, food, light and water, whether the power is out for two hours or three days. Oil lamps, shelf staple food and stored water are a must. The Aladdin lamps will also provide heat in an enclosed space.

Maintain that stove

Ensure that your wood heating or cooking stove is in good working order and your chimney is clean. If you live close to Lehman’s, in Kidron, Ohio, they have a certified chimney sweep on staff.

Clean up your yard

It’s always easier to work outside before the bitter cold hits. Cut blown down limbs into kindling. Rake the leaves and add them to your compost pile. Cover your wood pile to keep your fuel dry.

Seal in the heat and keep out the cold

Check windows and doors for drafts. Replace or repair as needed.

Check your outbuildings

Are there any leaks or damage that should be repaired? Also make sure your gates and fencing will keep your animals contained.

Don’t forget the livestock

Prepare a warm, dry place for your animals and calculate how much food and water they will need. Here’s a tip—to prevent their water from freezing in the trough, float a few bouncy balls in the water.
